Laurie Halse Anderson
I’m furious with pro-ana people ripping out quotes from Wintergirls and posting them to help others starve themselves. Isolating a line from a book that distorts the meaning of that book is obscene. That’s what book censors do.
Stop that shit now.
Anorexia is the most fatal of all mental illnesses. There is nothing empowering or cute or sexy about it. It’s a disease that kills, ruins lives, and ravages families. I wrote Wintergirls to show the horrifying damage of the disease, and how people struggling with it can reach for help and hope.
A lot of pro-ana people feel lost and depressed and lonely. I understand those feelings. Been there, lived that. They think they’ve found a community that will support them. I understand that, too. But listen up: people who truly support you don’t want you dead.
I don’t care what your body size is. I care about the health of your body and of your soul. I want you to feel supported and loved and valued. I want you to be strong enough to claim your place in the world, and to make the world even better.
Help me reach out to people who are trapped in their eating disorders. Help me reach out to the pro-ana community with love and show them other communities that can help them through rough times.
Let’s stop buying into the bullshit fed to us by media empires and fashion designers and other corporate overlords. Let’s stop hating on each other for the size of our thighs or our butts.
It’s the size of your heart that matters.
PS:  To those saying that being against pro-ana is another form of body hate: it’s not. I’m against smoking meth and shooting heroin for the same reasons - they are addictive dangerous behaviors that kill people.
